Summary
For Astrid Varnay (1918-2006), one of the world's greatest dramatic sopranos, opera was the family business. Vocally and musically trained by her mother, the coloratura soprano Maria Javor, she was just 23 when she made her unofficial debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera as a last-minute replacement for the suddenly ill Lotte Lehmann. Varnay's critically acclaimed performance as Sieglinde in Richard Wagner's "Die Walkure" catapulted her into the limelight and launched her illustrious career which flourished for more than five decades. First published by Northeastern University Press in 2000, this first paperback edition will attract a new audience to this personal account of a remarkable woman and her career
